Margaret Browning

It is with a very heavy heart that I have to report that, Margaret Browning has sadly passed away. Margaret was an exceptionally beautiful lady and a wonderful person and I feel so lucky that I have been able to say I have played in the same team as her at Hoylake Central and Melrose Bowling Club. Margaret was a really top class bowler and friend to everyone who was lucky enough to have played with her and against her. Our condolences go to Elsie and all Margaret's family at this really sad time.

2021 Annual General Meeting

After discussions between the 4 Officers of the Association, we have decided to defer our 2021 Annual General Meeting until January 2022. We have taken this decision in case we are hit again with another disastrous situation with Covid once we enter the Winter months. The Officers feel that it is wise to see how things progress now we out of the dreaded lockdown and with all restrictions lifted. A date for the meeting will be published as early as possible.

Wednesday September 29th

2021 Season finally ends and we look forward to a complete full season of events in 2022

What a fantasic experience it was to finally play competitive bowls again this season after the Covid19 disasters. With the late start we managed to complete a full list of Main League & Pairs League fixtures and in the Main League, it was New Brighton Queens Royal who completed an 8th consecutive Division One title win. West Kirby Victoria again finished in 2nd place. Division Two winners were the New Brighton Quarry Vikings 'B' team with Upton Victory Hall 'B' team finishing in 2nd place. New Brighton Quarry Vikings 'B' won all of their 14 matches. Manor Road 'C' won the Division Three title with a narrow 4 point advantage over Harrison Park 'B'.

The Pairs League Division One was won by New Brighton Queens Royal with 87 points and West Kirby Victoria finished in Second place again with 73 and a half points. Pairs Division Two winners were Magazine A team with 78 points just 2 and a half points ahead of Second place, Upton Victory Hall 'B' team. Division Three winners were Greasby with 85 points with Hoylake Central & Melrose 'C' team 6 and a half points behind in Second Place.

Congratulations to all the successful teams and indeed to every player who played throughout all the Leagues this season after the turmoils of the pandemic.

Monday September 20th

Nick Burridge wins Tony Vyskocil Memorial Trophy for third time.

Gladstone's Nick Burridge became the first bowler to win the Tony Vyskocil Memorial Trophy three times, yesterday at Manor Road Bowling Club. With a high quality of bowlers entering the Competition, Nick defeated Dave Gilmore 21-14 in the Final. His earlier victories included a win against Colin Saville in the First Round and then a 21-18 win against Jamie Isaac in round two. Nick followed this with a 21-18 win against Eddie Dutton in the Quarter Final. His Semi Final match saw him progress through to the Final after a 21-17 victory against Josh Bunting. Dave Gilmore started his run to the Final with 21-20 victory over D. Ferguson and then a 21-16 win against Bob Hodgson. Another tight match saw Dave beat Geoff Lynch 21-19 in the Quarter Final before he progressed through to the Final with a 21-11 win against Brian Somerville. In the Final, Nick kept up his high standard of bowling throughout the day to clinch the win 21-14 and become the first player to win the magnificent trophy for a third time. Thanks must go to Craig and Paul Saville for all their efforts in organising another magnificent Competition on the excellent Manor Road green.

Monday August 16th

Sunday August 1st

Wallasey CGBA Pairs League Start Times

Will all Clubs please remember that the Start time for all August & September Pairs League matches is now 6-15pm.

Tuesday July 20th

2021 Pairs League Fixtures

The 2021 Pairs League Fixtures can now be seen on this site. It has not been easy compiling the Fixtures and my thanks go to Mike Beckett for his help in enabling me to complete everything. Unfortunately there are some fixtures scheduled for Wednesday September 22nd and two of those matches will be played at greens with floodlights available if necessary (Hoylake Central & Melrose and Upton Victory Hall) but the other fixture at Manor Road where there are no lights available might cause a problem. Manor Road 'C' and Telegraph could start their match as early as 5-00pm if necessary if they want to avoid any possibility of playing in the dark. The forecast sunset time on that day is 7-10pm.

Saturday July 17th

Tony Vyskocil Memorial Competition

The 14th running of the Tony Vyscocil Memorial Competition will be held at Manor Road Bowling Club on Sunday September 19th. There will be 32 entries only for this competition and players wishing to enter (£15 Entry Fee) must contact either Craig or Paul Saville to do so. Prize money, subject to the required 32 entries will be £200 to the Winner, £100 to the Runner Up and £55 to the Semi Finalists, with the quarter Finalists receiving £30 each. The draw takes place on the day with starting times of 9-30am, 10-15am, 11-am and 11-30am. Home bowlers will have to give 2 shots and the Jack. John Cosgrove won the event when it was last held in 2019.

Friday July 2nd

No promotion or relegation this season in Wallasey CGBA Main Leagues or Pairs Leagues

Following enquiries from some Clubs concerning our 2021 Main League and Pairs League Fixtures and what will be the outcome at the end of the Season. The Wallasey CGBA will be following most of the other Bowling Associations around the Crown Green Bowling World and we will not be having any Promotion or Relegation from any Divisions this year. Prize money will be paid to the Winners and Runners Up of our Leagues at the Annual General Meeting in November, providing we are not caught up in another round of Government regulations regarding lock downs, if the terrible Covid disease returns again.

I will be formatting The Pairs League Fixtures next week.

Tuesday June 15th

Wallasey CGBA Veterans Individual Merit Competition Cancelled

Unfortunately because of yesterday's announcement from the Government regarding the extension of rules regarding lockdown, which now continues until July 21st, we will not now be playing the Veterans Individual Merit Competition scheduled for June 27th. With the increasing number of people in the North West of England including Wirral, Merseyside and Cheshire West now showing signs of Covid 19, we have no alternative but to cancel our event. We apologise to our Members wishing to enter the competition but if anything went wrong on the day we would not be able to justify holding the event when there are still more people sadly suffering.

Tuesday June 8th

European Football Championships

With the upcoming European Championships starting soon, there are bound to be clashes with scheduled Bowls matches and Home Country Teams playing in the Championship. All Wallasey CGBA League fixtures must be played on the already scheduled date but we have no objection to altering starting times provided both Teams agree to a change of time. With the Football matches due to start at 8-00pm, if your Club does want to start early please contact your opposing team as soon as possible to agree any change.

Wednesday June 2nd

Wallasey CGBA Veterans Individual Merit Competition

Hopefully with the Government still planning to open up the restrictions regarding the Covid19 pandemic on June 21st, we can plan to run one of our Individual Competitions without any rules regarding numbers of players and the opening of all Club Houses and Pavilions and Toilet facilities etc. Our first attempt to stage such an event will be the Veterans Individual Merit Competition on Sunday June 27th at a venue to be confirmed. This is a free to enter Competition for all Wallasey CGBA registered bowlers aged 60 or over on the date of the competition and the scratching time will be 10-30am on the day. Prize money will be paid by the Association to the Winner, Runner up and losing Semi Finalists. The current holder of the trophy is Manor Road bowler Dave Gilmore, who completed a Hat Trick of victories in 2017.

Friday May 21st

New date for all League Matches postponed last night

After yesterday's deluge decimated all but one of last night's League Fixtures, I have rearranged the new date for all of those fixtures to now be played on Tuesday June 8th.

Just a pity Tranmere's new pitch overcame any waterlogging problems.

Thursday May 20th

Wirral Borough Council Bowling Greens not to be used until further notice !!!!!!

After speaking to Wirral Borough Council this afternoon, I must inform all Clubs, that they are not to play any matches at all on Council owned greens until the Council confirm that all Toilet Facilities are available for use. The Council are working hard to make sure everything will be ready to restart bowls on their greens by Monday May 31st. All matches due to played at Council owned greens will be re-arranged to be played after that date. No one will be covered by Insurance if anything goes wrong when playing on these greens. Please do not ignore this notice !!!! Hopefully we will have a further update next week.

Monday May 17th

2021 Starred Player Lists

The Starred players for the 2021 Season can be accessed via the 2021 Starred Player link in the table at the left of this page or at the top of this page depending on which device you are using to access this site.

Monday April 26th

Poulton Bowling Club

Unfortunately Poulton Bowling Club have had to withdraw their 'B' team from the Association for the 2021 Season. Teams scheduled to play Poulton B in League matches will unfortunately have a bye on that date.

Monday April 26th

The Wallasey CGBA 2021 Season will start on Tuesday May 18th and despite earlier plans to play League and Cup matches this season, Clubs were asked to vote on whether they would prefer Cup matches or Pairs League matches instead. The overwhelming majority of support was to cancel all Cup Competitions for 2021 and to go ahead with the Main League and Pairs League formats. The Main League will start on Tuesday May 18th and will be played out to conclusion by Wednesday July 28th, weather permitting. League fixtures can now be accessed via this site and Pairs League fixtures will be formatted later in the season. Clubs will receive all the paraphernalia needed to commence the season within the next week or so and hopefully we can get on and enjoy our bowls again.

Wednesday April 14th

The Wirral & District Crown Green Bowling Association have been issued with the following list of protocols to be observed by all Clubs when the 2021 Bowling Season finally gets underway.

The following protocols have been drawn up in conjunction with the Bebington & District BL, Birkenhead & Wirral CGBL (Afternoon Section), Birkenhead & Wirral CGBL (Evening League), North Wirral BL and Wallasey CGBA.

Players MUST NOT attend any match if they or any member of their immediate family have any symptoms of Covid.

If there are cases of Covid in your Club then you should inform Track and Trace and your recent opponents and the Leagues.

All greens must have the following available for the duration of a match:

  • Hand Gel
  • Wet Wipes
  • Kitchen Roll
  • Waste bins for used wipes and cloths. These should be emptied into the general waste bin after every match

Jacks and mats must be cleaned after each game has been completed.

Measuring equipment must be cleaned if being used by more than one player.

It is recommended that:

A risk assessment of your green is carried out before the start of your first league match.

Players should wash or sanitise their hands before and at the end of their match.

Players using any toilets should use sanitising wipes to clean any surfaces that they may have touched.

Handshakes should be avoided with a ‘fist pump’ or ‘elbow knock’ used as an alternative action.

It is recommended that a designated player is assigned as measurer for the duration of the match.

Social distancing should be maintained for those players not on the green.

The wearing of masks is not essential, but players can wear one if they wish.

The wearing of gloves is not essential, but players can wear them if they wish.

It is recommended that Clubs should download the Covid QR code from the Government website or click here

Please don’t forget:

Government legislation currently prevents the use of car sharing with anyone outside of your household or support bubble.

These protocols will be revised on a regular basis as Government advice, recommendations and regulations are amended.
