It is with great sadness that we heard of the passing of yet another stalwart of our sport.
Eric Bailey, formerly of Highbury BC, passed away last night. He had been a long-standing member of the club, including time served on their committee and he was involved with many club activities including open competitions. In recognition of his commitment to the club he was nominated to be our league’s vice president and would have been our president next year. He will be greatly missed by all and not just because he helped run the club bingo.
Our thoughts go out to his wife Pat and their family at this sad time.
It is with great sadness that we heard of the news of the passing of Jim Batey, formerly of Grove Park BC. He had bowled in the Senior Citizens league for many years. He was appointed President to our league for this season and was a joy to be around. His contribution to Senior Citizens bowling was enormous and he was looking forward to continuing that contribution in this season. Sadly it was not to be. He will be sorely missed.
Further advice received from the BCGBA is that all bowling is to be suspended immediately until such time as we are allowed to resume competition. As there is also a need to avoid all mass gatherings and sporting events, all BCGBA meetings and competitions including qualifier events should now be postponed so as to avoid unnecessary travel.
As a Bowls community we do need to look after our members and we are encouraged to follow this advice and support particularly the at-risk groups, the over 70s and those with a medical condition at this very difficult time.
In view of the expected significant increase in cases of Coronavirus, all league fixtures in the first half of the season are cancelled. League fixtures will therefore begin on Tuesday 7th July. We will endeavour to run our cup competitions if at all possible on Tuesdays in late May and June once the uptake by teams and the situation with the Coronavirus are known.
