WHITCHURCH & DISTRICT BOWLING LEAGUE:

OFFICIALS’ REPORTS FOR 2018

Item 7.              Secretary’s Annual Report and Correspondence – Alison Hine.

Firstly, I would again like to thank John and Ann Mitchell for the huge amount of work they put in to produce the Fixture Books, score cards and results sheets each year.

Soon after last year’s AGM we were notified that Cheswardine had withdrawn their B team and also that a new Prees team would be entered in Division 7.  Malpas also withdrew their C Team.

The 2018 season was generally quiet although it went on longer than normal as a result of bad weather during mid-September.  Various matches were also rescheduled as a result of the surprising success of the England team in the World Cup.

The Annual Dinner was attended by more people than last year.  Bringing it forward to the week before the Shropshire half term seems to have worked well as did reduced meals for Under 16s and the very successful disco.  It was announced at the Executive Meeting in December 2018 that it was intended to do the same for 2019 but unfortunately the Drayton League has brought their dinner forward to October this year and has booked the same date.  It has therefore been necessary to change the date for the Whitchurch Dinner to Friday 29 November.

So far we have one team withdrawing from the League, AWC E, but both Edgmond and Joules have notified us that they will be entering new teams in Division 7.

DBS checks for North Shropshire Clubs will take place at the District on 9 February between 12.00 and 2.30 pm.  Time slots are filling up so anyone requiring a DBS check should contact the League Secretary to book a place.

The County Secretary has asked that all Clubs be reminded of the need to update their Club page on the County website, as this information will be used to update their CR1 form, and also to inform her if they change secretary. The County AGM will take place on Monday 4 February.  Clubs who do not send a representative to the AGM will be fined.

Finally, this is my last AGM as I am standing down as Secretary.  I would like to thank all the League Officials and the Club Secretaries for their support over the last seven years.

Item 9.  Fixtures/Results/Webmaster’s Annual Report – Mike Beckett.

Weatherise 2018 was very kind to us for bowling with very few matches having to be postponed. The exception was the week of the 18 September when torrential rain meant that over half the matches of that week had to be postponed. These were completed by the end of the first week of October, helped by there being more bowling nights available to play at that time of year.

Unfortunately, there were 65 Walk Overs during the season which can at times make it unfair for the opposing player when they turn up expecting to play and end up with no game.  This can also lead to an advantage for some teams when they automatically receive 21 chalks. Last year in Division 7, two teams received eight Walk Overs whilst one team received only one. This can mean that a team moves up to a position where they receive prize money or even get promoted.

This is the reason why I am proposing the rule change for 4.3 to assist those teams that have a problem raising a full team some weeks due to holidays or sickness.  Many Leagues that I cover operate a very similar system and now that it is all computerized it is very easy to monitor. This should then encourage a club not to withdraw a team due to shortage of players at times.

We are also now in a situation whereby we are gradually losing teams. This is happening in all Leagues that play in the evening due to afternoon Leagues expanding as bowlers reach 60 and prefer to play in the afternoon instead of the evening.  We are now down to 12 teams in Divisions 6 and 7.  If we have a team withdraw from either of these divisions, without a new team joining, it means that to avoid having only 11 teams in a division it requires  having to relegate 3 from a higher division of 14 to evenly spread out the number of teams in each division. Whilst it has happened before it is not covered in rule 3.3 and that is why that rule needs modifying so that a team is aware that whilst they finished third from bottom they might still get relegated.

I am continually having to modify the website design due to most users viewing the information on tablets or phones and that technology is forever changing. If anyone has a problem viewing pages please let me know as sometimes I may not be aware of the situation.

Item 10.  Competitions Report 2017 – Phil Scott.

Firstly thanks to all the officers, hosts, groundsmen and players for their contribution to another successful season of competitions, Individual and club.

The Senior Inter League team won the hastily rearranged competition hosted by ourselves at the last minute, Many thanks to Bridgewater and the District for hosting on the day.  We had 2 teams in the competition itself, captained by Dale Booth and Jamie Brookes.  Dale’s team managed to win their group and progress to the final against Tanners League. After the first 4 blocks Whitchurch were two behind, Man of the final Chris Jones beating Martin Lloyd 21-12 to win the individual trophy, but Whitchurch had a strong back 4 and two good wins from Neil Boxall and Paul (Chummers) Latham meant we just won by 6.

Well done to all for our first win since 2013.

The Junior Inter League teams both played well down in Shrewsbury.  The A team won their group at Oxon winning all their games, even beating the very strong Ludlow side in the group decider. The B team who played at Bicton also did very well with a team of newcomers; there were some great performances winning one group game against Mid Shropshire C.  Onto the final which was held at Hanwood against local players from the Tanners.  Our team, led by captain Edward Proudlove, did very well to get to the final but with local knowledge of a difficult green the Tanners team just got the better of our A team .

The Veterans Inter League hosted by ourselves at Chester Road and AWC in September was also a very enjoyable day of bowls. At Chester Road in the group stages our B team led by Eddie Broad just won their group by having a bigger aggregate of +46 compared to Wem League and North Shropshire Ladies, who also won 2 matches apiece.  In the other group of three teams it again came down to aggregates; all had won one game and after much deliberation Mid Shropshire had a 7 shot advantage over our A team to progress to the final at AWC.  In the final against the much experienced Vets team from Mid Shropshire our own local lads did the league proud battling all the way to just miss out on the title, hopefully 2019 will be our year.
