Paul Roberts wins Flyers

On a pleasant morning in Birkenhead Park yesterday, Hawksbury's Paul Roberts put, what has been for him, a run of fairly mediocre results behind him and he took his first win of this session  of the Winter Flyers beating Gladstone's Ray Lynch in the final. To even reach the quarters Roberts had to scrape past last week's winner Tixall's Nigel Hughes and then after a relatively easy win over Bob Hodgson of Upton Victory Hall he had to fight back from being 17-20 down to West Kirby's Bill Atkinson in the semi final. Lynch, trying to win his second title, had two comfortable wins on his way to the final firstly against New Brighton Quarry Vikings Eddie Dutton and then Derek Smith of St. Georges. Lynch took an early lead in the final but Roberts fought back to lead 20-15 and despite a late fight back by Lynch he was able to clinch his win. The final Tournament of this year between the top sixteen in the points table will be on Sunday 17th December. Currently the top five in the table are: Anthony O'Neill 42, Joe Edwards 34, Ray Lynch 31, Tommy Walker 30 and Bill Atkinson on 26.

Results: Quarter Finals: R. Lynch (Gladstone) 21, E. Dutton (New Brighton Quarry Vikings) 11; D. Smith (St Georges) 21, D. Briscoe (Llanymynech) 12; W. Atkinson (West Kirby) 21, J. Isaac (Manor Road) 18; P. Roberts (Hawksbury) 21, R. Hodgson (Upton Victory Hall) 09. Semi Finals: Lynch 21, Smith 12; Roberts 21, Atkinson 20.  Final: Roberts 21, Lynch 18.

Annual General Meeting

Last night's Annual General Meeting at Manor Road was well supported by all of our Clubs and Life Members and Honoured guests from the other local Bowling Associations. As usual a full report of all our activities from the 2017 season was given to everyone present by our Financial Secretary, Peter Dodd, Association President & Competition Secretary, Keith Etches and our Federation Team, Away Captain & Selector, Owen Doyle. We only had one item to discuss regarding Rule changes and this was a change to the Divisional Cup Finals Format and a new playing schedule for teams with 2 teams or more playing in the Divisional Cups. With no amendments proposed to the Executive Committees new playing Schedule of Finals, Harold Jones Cup (1st) Sheppick Cup (2nd) and Association Cup (3rd) or the new ruling that any player who has played in the Harold Jones Cup Final is not allowed to play in either the Sheppick Cup or Association Cup Finals and any player who has played in the Sheppick Cup Final is not allowed to play in the Association Cup Final, these changes were passed unanimously.

The ruling regarding Clubs with more than one team playing in the Divisional Cup matches scheduled for the same night was also accepted but with just one vote against. Clubs will not be forced to play 2 different 6 home 6 away matches on one green on the same night anymore, with Tuesday's, possibly Wednesday's and definitely Thursday's being utilised in the same week to complete the round of fixtures. Clubs will not be forced to play on a Wednesday if there is a genuine reason for not being able to raise a team of 6 on a Wednesday night.

Anthony O'Neill wins today's Classic Flyers at Birkenhead Park

Tixall's Anthony O'Neill beat Gladstone's Joe Edwards in the Final of he latest Classic Flyer competition held throughout the Winter months in Birkenhead Park. A cold and wet night on Saturday did not stop 24 bowlers turning out for today's competition and Anthony O'Neill had to play five matches to claim his winning prize. Early victories over Ron Hitchmoigh and Andy Buchanan saw him facing Paul Roberts in the Quarter Finals and a fairly comfortable 21-14 took him into the Semi's where he then had another comfortable 21-12 win against Colin Portis. Joe Edwards had early round wins against John Harrison and John Joy before coming up against a previous winner this Winter in James Fitzpatrick in his Quarter Final match. Joe posted a reasonable comfortable 21-14 win against James to move into a Semi Final match against young Jamie Isaac from Manor Road. Joe proved too strong for Jamie to take a 21-13 victory and move into the Final against Anthony O'Neill. Anthony kept up his good form from earlier in the day and claimed a fine victory with a 21-14 winning score.

Royden Hall move to Bebington & District Bowling League

Royden Hall Bowling Club have decided that they are leaving the Wallasey CGBA to join the Bebington & District Bowling League for the 2018 season. We are sorry to hear of this decision but respect their right to play wherever they feel is best for their Club. Royden Hall were relegated from our Division One at the end of the season just finished having only won one League match all season. With a number of players having indicated that they are leaving the club for pastures new, Royden Hall members decided at their meeting last Thursday that their playing strength would be better suited for the Bebington League in 2018. We can only wish Royden Hall the best of luck in their new venture and hope that their decision is proved to be correct at the end of the 2018 season.

Unfortunately this now leaves us with just 27 teams left in the Association for 2108 and therefore we will be operating 3 Divisions of 9 teams per Division. The Executive Committee did look at a possible Two Division format but felt that with two Divisions this would be unfair on the teams at the lower end of the Leagues expected to compete against much stronger opposition in just 2 Divisions.
