CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS 2018 - THE RESULT
12 of the leagues 43 clubs sent a representative along to this competition and those that did not attend missed a great competition on a warm and sunny September morning.
Every match was keenly fought, but in the end it was a battle of the Tonys, Freeth and Toal, and in a match that could have gone either way, it was Tony Freeth who took the title 21-18. Full details can be found on the merits page.
Our thanks go to the Black Horse B.C. who were enthusiastic hosts and to all the players and supporters who attended.

Remember that the Black Horse pub is a business and only food and drink purchased from the pub may be consumed around the green.
League Cup Final 2018 - The Result
The League Cup Final 2018 was a surprisingly one sided affair with AG College A beating Kings Noron A 126-60 to retain the trophy they won in 2017. Our congratulations go to the winners and our thanks to the Maggies BC who prepared the green well and looked after the players and supporters.
Doubles Merit Finals - The Result
The Doubles Merits Finals were played at the RABL on Thursday 6th September on a green that was impossibly fast at the beginning but got slower and slower as heavy rain took control. After a long and competitive competition, the pair who emerged wet but triumphant were John Price and Dave Lowe from Olton Tavern, beating Jacqui and Ray Barnett in the final.
Our congratulations to the winners and our thanks to the RABL for allowing the use of their green and to Keith & Olive Tear who provided tea and biscuits throughout the competition and to all the competitors and supporters who braved the conditions. Details of the results is shown on he merits page.
Ladies Day - The Result
Carole Slater told me she was only there because her fellow Alcester bowlers had talked her into attending. She was glad she did though as she emerged as the winner at the end of the day, the best of 13 entries, and beating Rita Barnett (Weoley Hill) in the final. Full details of the results are on the merits page.
Our thanks to Colebrook Bowls Club for hosting the event, the Colebrook pub for providing an excellent buffet, all the players that attended and the supprters who helped with the administration.
Acorns Childrens Hospice Trust
The following email has been received from Annesa Hussain representing the Acorn Childrens Hospice Trust
On behalf of all at Acorns Childrens Hospice I wanted to say a massive thank you to you South and West Birmingham Over 60’s Bowling Association for your generous donation of £568 raised from your charity match bringing your total raised up to a £1,842.00.
The support you provide is very much appreciated by all at Acorns. Organisations like yours make it possible for us to achieve our mission of providing a network of holistic, specialist and palliative care services to children, young people and their families in our region.
Thank you once again for your continued support.
Your committee would like to echo this response and thank all the clubs who took part in this years event, players who gave up their time on the day, members who donated so generously to this worthy cause, Kings Norton Bowls Club for hosting the event and all the volunteers who talked people into taking part.
We are only a small committee, and, since the death of Mick Logan, we have struggled to give the time needed to contact the clubs and get the best sponsorship possible. If you would like to help us next year please offer your services at the end of season meeting.
Once again a big thanks for your generosity.
Tommy Palmer Memorial Trophy
For those of you who could not make the event, you missed a friendly but very competitive competition set in a great location and enhanced by a superb buffet provided by Woodlands Park Bowls Club.
We would like to thank the seven players who did support the event and who fought for every point in every game. This years winner was Jack Sharpe of Hall Green who defeated home bowler Norman Ravenhurst 21-15 in the final. Full details are shown on the merits page.
Our thanks go to Woodlands Park Bowls Club who, once again, looked after us with refreshments all day and deserve better support from their fellow clubs.
Ladies Day - 20th August 2018

THIEF ABOUT - BE AWARE
On Thursday 2 purses were stolen from the pavilion of Solihull Ladies Bowling Club by a very plausible early 20’s, 6ft, well spoken chap. He said he was making enquiries on behalf of his Granddad who was relocating from Hereford. He told an identical tale and thieved a purse from Shirley Indoor Bowling so clearly he is targeting bowls Clubs...should Clubs be made aware to look out for him.
Ed Comment: This happened at Bournville Sports and other clubs in the same area last year.
Doubles Merits 2018
The deadline for receiving entries for the Doubles Merit has now passed and I can confirm that we have received 17 entries for the 2018 competition, an improvement on last year. Kings Norton Bowls Club have kindly agreed to let us use their green for the preliminary round which takes place on Thursday 9th August. The matches start at 11am and all entrants should report by 10.50am to allow the draw to take place. Full details of all entrants is shown on the merits page.
Singles Merit Finals - The Result
The finals were played at Bournville Sports on 12th July, and resulted in a win for Steve Davies (Hall Green) who narrowly defeated Peter Dunbavin (Black Horse) in the final 21-15. Full details of the win are shown on the merits page.
Inter League Match Result
We are pleased to report that the teams were successful against East Birmingham on 2nd July. The home team won by 223-198 at Ye Olde Knowle, whilst the away team were also victorious winning 219-216. Full details of the result will appear on the Inter-League page shortly.
ACORNS CHILDREN'S HOSPICE TRUST - CHARITY MATCH
The match took place this morning at Kings Norton Bowls Club with 16 bowlers playing in two teams. Not that the result matters, the idea being to raise money for the Acorns Children's Hospice, but the England Team beat the Rest of the UK Team 142-125.
The important bit is that to date we have raised £1191 in sponsorship plus £83 pounds from the raffle making a total of £1274. There are still donations to come, which I expect to push the total up to about £1500. If you were unable to attend, but would like to make a donation, please send a cheque made out to the Acorns Childrens Hospice Trust to our treasurer, Olive Tear.
Our thanks go to the clubs who have supported this event and to the players who gave up their time to take part.
Full details are shown on the Acorns Hospice page.
The response to this competition is again poor and as a result, the preliminary round on the 31st May has been cancelled with all entrants going through to finals day on 12th July. A full list of entries can be found on the Merits page.
Weoley Hill B.C. - Change of Captain

Sad news from Kings Norton B.C.
Jim Taylor sadly died on Thursday 3rd May after a long battle with heart problems. He was the beloved husband of Eva and a devoted family man. He had been a prominent member of our club since 1980. He had been President, green keeper and was a very keen gardener. He also loved to fish and was on the Committee of the Birmingham Anglers Association and a member of the Legion Fishing Club. Both Jim and Eva bought a short mat for the club so they could take part in the short mat leagues, which they're doing well in. Jim was also President of the South West Birmingham Over 60's league and Vice President. He encouraged new bowlers and would always have time and advice for them.
Jim had a beautiful tenor singing voice and enjoyed singing with Eva in the Tinkers Farm Operatic Society.
Needless to say he will be sorely missed.
The funeral will be held at Lodge Hill Cemetery on Monday 21st May at 1.30 and after at Kings Norton Bowls Club.
Rest in peace Jim.
